Buchanan County Public Schools
The Russell
County Public School system is comprised of four secondary schools,
one vocational/technical school, and six elementary and middle
schools.
All Buchanan
County Schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges
ands Schools, and secondary schools have advanced placement, dual
enrollment and gifted programs. Lebanon High School operates a
CISCO Academy, which includes courses in web design, networking
and other IT essential programs.
The Buchanan
County Career and Technical Center, located in Grundy, offers
training in the following subjects: auto body repair, auto mechanics,
building trades, business education, cosmetology, electricity,
industrial maintenance, nursing assistants, and welding.
Buchanan County
graduates an average of 260 students annually; approximately 32%
of these students enter the labor force or military, while 68%
pursue higher education opportunities.
Buchanan County
is home to two higher education institutions, the Appalachian
School of Law, a fully accredited law school that awards approximately
100 Juris Doctor degrees each year, and the University
of Appalachia College of Pharmacy, a new, three-year pharmacy
school that began classes in August 2005. These private colleges
underscore the county leaders’ dedication to education and
providing advanced opportunities to the citizens of the county
and region.
Students are served by Southwest Virginia
Community College and the University
of Virginia’s College at Wise, as well as many regional
colleges and universities, including: the Southwest
Virginia Higher Education Center, Emory
& Henry College, East
Tennessee State University, Bluefield
College, Virginia
Intermont College, King
College, Virginia
Tech and the University
of Tennessee at Knoxville. These colleges offer a variety
of programs to suit diverse students’ needs.
